The United Nations has changed the Republic of Turkey's country name in its documents from "Turkey" to "Türkiye", following a request from the government in Ankara.

A UN spokesman said that Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, received a letter from the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on 1 June officially requesting the change to "Türkiye" for all UN affairs.

The country called itself Türkiye (pronounced "tur-key-YAY") after its declaration of independence in in 1923. The Turkish government has been pushing for the change since December 2021 when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ordered that organisations and individuals use "Türkiye" to better represent the country, its culture and values. Government ministries have begun using "Türkiye" in official documents, and "Made in Türkiye" should now be used on exported goods.
