THE BUSINESS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE
The UK trade statistics for the 12 months ending April 2024 reveal a total trade value of £1,746.8 billion, a 3.2% decline from the previous year. Exports decreased by 3.1% to £857.1 billion, and imports fell by 3.3% to £889.7 billion. Notably, exports to the EU increased by 3.7%, while imports from the EU surged by 9.0%. Conversely, exports to non-EU countries rose by 2.9%, but imports from non-EU countries dropped by 9.5%.
UK’s global ranking for exports of goods and services is noted as having increased from 7th in 2021 to 4th in 2022. It is interesting to compare this to the figures compiled by the World Trade Organization in their annual World Trade Statistical Review split between exporters and importers of goods or and services covering 2020-2022 (Figures for 2023 will be in the World Trade Statistical Review of 2024 published later this year).
