THE BUSINESS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE
International Trade minister Liz Truss said on 30 June that new regulations will be introduced to help protect the British steel industry, after accepting recommendations from the newly established Trade Remedies Authority (TRA). /p>
Truss said that the government had to accept or reject in full the TRA recommendations, which advised the extension of the UK steel safeguard measure across 10 product categories for a further three years, and the revocation of the measure across nine product categories.
She said the government will introduce a temporary extension, for one year, on a further 5 of the 19 steel products, adding: “Imports outside the quotas will face a tariff of 25%.”
Truss also said that she will review the TRA system: “The Trade Remedies framework was first introduced in 2018 under the previous government. The current government will review it to ensure it is up-to-date, champions WTO rules and is fit for purpose in the post-COVID world.”
