THE BUSINESS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Starting 5 July 2024, after months of investigation the European Union will impose duties on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China. These duties will be added on top of the ordinary import duty of 10% levied on imports of electric vehicles within the EU. This move aims to address concerns about market distortion and unfair competition due to subsidies provided by the Chinese government to its EV manufacturers. The duties are intended to level the playing field for European automakers and protect the EU's automotive industry from a potential influx of low-cost Chinese EVs. This decision reflects the EU's broader strategy to ensure fair trade practices and support its domestic industries. The new tariffs may lead to increased prices for Chinese EVs in the European market, potentially affecting consumer choice and prompting Chinese manufacturers to seek other markets or adjust their pricing strategies.
