THE BUSINESS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE
The acute shortage of 40ft high cube containers is again severely impacting the shipment of export cargo from Bangladesh. Major liner operators, including MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company and Hapag-Lloyd AG, are working to reposition equipment from nearby ports to address this issue. Looking at previous news reports, this is not an isolated case with similar news items regularly referring to container shortages in Bangladesh from 2020 through to 2024. In 2020 scarcity of containers in the Chattogram Port was attributed to the substantial fall of imports as a result of COVID-19 while in 2022 it was said to be caused by the impact of the Chinese New Year import slowdown from China and the Russian invasion in Ukraine. This container shortage is said to be worsened by congestion at the Port of Singapore, where hundreds of containers bound for Bangladesh are stuck due to berthing delays.
The scarcity of these essential containers is disrupting supply chains and causing delays, highlighting the need for improved logistics management in the region. Efforts are underway to alleviate the shortage and ensure the smooth flow of exports from Bangladesh.
